Library Card Signup and Residency Verification


You can use your Pamunkey Regional Library card to checkout and return books, access our downloadable resources, and more. Your library card can be used at any PRL branch library.   1. Who qualifies for a card?
    • Residents of the counties of Goochland, Hanover, and King William.
    • Anyone who owns property, attends an educational institution, or is employed in Goochland, Hanover, and King William.
    • Anyone over 65 years of age.
    • All other Virginians may qualify for a free card by presenting a public library card from their place of residence.

  2. What do Goochland, Hanover, and King William County residents need to bring in to complete the registration process?

    Photo identification from a government source with current address:
    • Valid Driver’s License
    • Valid Virginia ID card
    • U.S. Military Identification
    • U.S. Passport

    If your photo ID does not include your current address or has a P.O. Box an additional document showing your current residential address must be provided, such as:
    • Utility bill in your name dated within 30 days
    • Virginia Voter’s registration information
    • Vehicle registration
    • Employment or Insurance ID
    • Lease agreement/Mortgage
    • Phone/Tax bill
    Parents or guardians signing for someone under the age of 18 must be present and provide identification and proof of residency.
    Registrants who use a Post Office Box as a mailing address must show proof of current physical address.

  3. I don’t live in Goochland, Hanover, or King William counties. Can I still get a card?
    If you reside outside the counties served by PRL but you work, go to school, or own property in one the counties we serve, you are eligible for a PRL card. In addition to a photo identification from a government source, non-residents also will need to bring documents showing proof of their eligibility.
    *King and Queen County residents are not eligible.

    For non-residents, examples of acceptable documents of employment include:
    • Employee Identification
    • Paycheck stub
    • Letter from employer on employer letterhead

    Examples of acceptable documents of current school enrollment include:
    • Current school identification card
    • Current tuition receipt
    • Documentation from school on official letterhead indicating student is enrolled
    • Class list from Registrar

    Examples of acceptable documents of taxpayer status include:
    • Current property tax statement
    • Current tax receipt

    Renewals can no longer be completed online or by phone.
