Lily Valance, a music hall singer, throws herself into the decadent pleasures of the 1920s, as a way to forget the horrors of World War I. When Captain Stephen Winters meets Lily, he sees in her the possiblity of forgetting his guilt over surviving the Flanders battlefields, where so many soldiers perished. They marry, but his respectible family does not approve. Only when Stephen's terrors merge dangerously close with reality, do all who love him come to a terrible reckoning.
